In this presentation, Dr. Mark Shapiro of the popular Explore the Space podcast discusses the challenge of asking patients about their firearm safety measures as part of routine screening questions. He highlights legislation around this topic, as well as barriers, strategies, and benefits of implementing firearm safety screening. He advocates that physicians take an active part in helping improve the public health emergency of gun violence.

Needs Statement

Faculty physicians and allied health practitioners actively involved in patient care in both the inpatient and outpatient setting at BTH, HHS, BCM CHI St. Luke's, the VA, and the Baylor Clinic need to be updated on strategies for implementing new educational techniques, synthesizing and applying the evidence on current general medicine topics, and analyzing effective transitions of care and other systems based practices. The series aims to broaden the awareness of learners in these topic areas and enhance their skills to improve patient outcomes.

Educational Objectives

At the conclusion of the session, the participants should be able to:

  • Summarize the impact of the Dickey Amendment.
  • Discuss how to properly secure firearm for storage purposes.
  • Develop strategies to speak with patients regarding how to properly secure firearms.
  • Realize how physicians can also be an advocate on this public health.
