House Staff Research Symposium Presentations (June 8, 2023)

Needs Statement

Faculty and trainees within the Department of Medicine who are involved in the care of patients need to receive regular updates on recent advances and guidelines in the field of internal medicine. Clinical scenarios will be used to review the current management of common medical conditions, including chronic pain and opioid abuse. Multidisciplinary sessions will be also used to educate learners about human trafficking and the role of physicians in identifying and assisting victims in the community. The overall aim of the series is to advance clinical knowledge, enhance the quality of patient care, and improve treatment outcomes.

Educational Objectives

At the conclusion of the session, the participants should be able to:

• Appraise current understanding of the diagnostic approach to suspected transthyretin cardiac amyloidosis, given the possible limitations of cardiac scintigraphy.
• Describe the epidemiology and risk factors of cysticercosis in a population living along the Texas-Mexico border.
• Analyze the racial and ethnic disparities in the anatomic location of arteriovenous access placement, comparing the likelihood of black and white patients to initiate hemodialysis with the preferred forearm access, and propose strategies to address and reduce these disparities.
• Define the cellular and molecular drivers of ryanodine receptor-2 calcium leakage in postoperative atrial fibrillation.
• Identify the role and value of workshops centered on preparing an educational deliverable in developing medical students' teaching skills.
