This Anesthesiology Grand Rounds session will take place on Wednesday, May 22, 2024 at 6:30 a.m. Attendance will be available remotely through Zoom.

Needs Statement

Anesthesiologists, certified registered nurse anesthetists, student nurse anesthetists, nurse practitioners, certified anesthesiology assistants, and anesthesiology fellows, residents, and medical students need to receive regular updates on new advances in anesthesiology research and technologies. Expert presentations on cutting-edge anesthesiology topics will be used as an impetus for discussion. The aim of the series is to expand clinical knowledge, improve competence, enhance the quality of anesthesiology care, and improve patient outcomes.

Educational Objectives

Incorporating Standardized Process to Improve Handoff of General Anesthetic Cases

At the conclusion of the session, the participants should be able to:

  • Comprehend the benefits of intraoperative handoff process standardization.
  • Recognize the parts of a handoff process that are evidence based.
  • Assess the joint commissions regulations regarding handoff processes.
  • Summarize the characteristics included in the Ben Taub Medical Center intraoperative template.

Test/Call Me! Improving OR Start Times Via Phone Communication

At the conclusion of the session, the participants should be able to:

  • Improve Operation room start times.
  • Assess OR turnover.
  • Upgrade communication with OR staff and PACU nurses.
  • Enhance patient satisfaction.

Barriers to Postpartum Tubal Ligations at Ben Taub Hospital

At the conclusion of the session, the participants should be able to:

  • Identify barriers to postpartum tubal ligations at Ben Taub Hospital in Harris County.
  • Apply a systematic, formal approach to the analysis of unfulfilled ppBTLs.
  • Use a fishbone diagram as a graphic tool to explore and display possible causes of unfulfilled ppBTLs
