This Anesthesiology Grand Rounds session will take place on Wednesday, February 14, 2024 at 6:30 a.m. Attendance will be available remotely through Zoom.

Needs Statement

Anesthesiologists, certified registered nurse anesthetists, student nurse anesthetists, nurse practitioners, certified anesthesiology assistants, and anesthesiology fellows, residents, and medical students need to receive regular updates on new advances in anesthesiology research and technologies. Expert presentations on cutting-edge anesthesiology topics will be used as an impetus for discussion. The aim of the series is to expand clinical knowledge, improve competence, enhance the quality of anesthesiology care, and improve patient outcomes.

Educational Objectives

“Now You See Me”: Implicit Bias and the Impact on Patients

At the conclusion of the session, the participants should be able to:

  • Define bias and outline its consequences in medicine.
  • Identify ways that bias affects patient outcomes.
  • Describe ways to combat implicit bias.
  • Identify strategies that can be implemented in clinical practice.

Regional Anesthesia and Trauma

At the conclusion of the session, the participants should be able to:

  • Distinguish between the risks and benefits of regional anesthesia in a trauma care setting.
  • Differentiate the type of case and treatment goals.
  • Recognize the impact of pain on trauma outcomes.
  • Review consent in relation to the type of case.

Intraoperative Oxygenation and Hyperoxia

At the conclusion of the session, the participants should be able to:

  • Review current research on perioperative oxygenation.
  • Describe the potential benefits and harmful effects of liberal verses restrictive oxygenation strategies.
  • Determine optimal oxygenation goals for surgical patients.
