Open to the Possibilities: A Perspective on Professional Challenges and Opportunities in International Clinical Research

Needs Statement

Baylor College of Medicine physicians, fellows, residents, medical and allied health students, and other healthcare providers need to maintain their professionalism while managing a large patient workload, treating patients with chronic illnesses and comorbidities, and working within fiscal constraints. Simulated cases and decision-making encounters will be used as an impetus to discuss the personal attributes, behaviors, and commitments that are essential to maintain professionalism in day-to-day practice. The series aims to demonstrate the importance of interprofessional relationships, collaborations between disciplines, consistency in conduct, and refinement of communication skills to enhance the quality of healthcare overall and improve patient outcomes.

Educational Objectives

At the conclusion of the session, the participants should be able to:

• Discuss ethical considerations in the planning and conduct of clinical trials in low-income and middle-income countries.
• Discuss strategies for community engagement in addressing unanticipated events in international clinical research
• Identify opportunities for bidirectional learning in the process of implementing international research.

BCM does not view the existence of financial relationships with commercial interests as implying bias or decreasing the value of a presentation. It is up to participants to determine whether the relationships influence the activity faculty with regard to exposition or conclusions. If at any time during this activity you feel that there has been commercial/promotional bias, notify the Activity Director or Activity Coordinator.
