In this presentation, Dr. Sharmila Anandasabapathy discusses her work in global health and gastrointestinal cancer screening, and Dr. Rachel Davis reviews efforts by Baylor College of Medicine to study and partner with international organizations in efforts to improve surgical access and quality worldwide.

Needs Statement

Surgeons, advanced practice providers, fellows, residents, and medical students in various surgical specialties and subspecialties need to receive regular updates on advances in surgical care and clinical practices. Novel technologies and procedures will be examined as means to improve the diagnosis and treatment of medical conditions requiring surgical intervention. The series aims to expand the knowledge of learners, enhance surgical skills, increase surgical efficiency, disseminate surgical best practices, and improve surgical outcomes.

Educational Objectives

Global Health and Gastrointestinal Cancers: Technology and Innovation

At the conclusion of the activity, the participants should be able to:

  • Identify challenges in delivering gastrointestinal and endoscopic technologies to the world equitably.
  • Provide an overview of several novel, portable and point of care approaches to GI cancer screening and early detection, including AI-guided platforms.
  • Summarize an overview of novel facilitators and platforms to development of novel GI technologies.

Baylor Global Surgery: A Ten-Year Retrospective

At the conclusion of the activity, the participants should be able to:

  • Discuss the problem of global surgery access and quality worldwide.
  • Outline the history of Baylor’s global surgery programs and partnerships.
  • Identify current global surgery efforts within the college.
