This Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery Grand Rounds session will take place on Wednesday, May 15, 2024 at 7:00 a.m. Attendance will be available in-person at Alkek Building, Room N.315.

Needs Statement

Surgeons, advanced practice providers, fellows, residents, and medical students in various surgical specialties and subspecialties need to receive regular updates on advances in surgical care and clinical practices. Novel technologies and procedures will be examined as means to improve the diagnosis and treatment of medical conditions requiring surgical intervention. The series aims to expand the knowledge of learners, enhance surgical skills, increase surgical efficiency, disseminate surgical best practices, and improve surgical outcomes.

Educational Objectives

The Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center: History and Reflections

At the conclusion of the session, the participants should be able to:

  • Explore the history of Michael E. DeBakey Veteran Affairs Medical Center.
  • Discuss surgical techniques pioneered at the Veteran Affairs with Baylor College of Medicine collaboration.
  • Assess the surgical volume and outcomes of the Veteran Affairs Medical Center.

Artificial Intelligence in Surgery

At the conclusion of the session, the participants should be able to:

  • Obtain a general understanding of the development and inner workings of artificial intelligence tools.
  • Learn about AI tools in development that may be incorporated in future surgical practice.
  • Gain a preliminary tool set for evaluating the potential of proposed AI tools.

Integrating Robotic Surgery into General Surgery Training

At the conclusion of the session, the participants should be able to:

  • Define the perceptions and challenges of integrating robotic training into general surgery residency.
  • Identify the fundamentals and core concepts of a robotic curriculum.
  • Review Baylor College of Medicine robotic curriculum and experiences.
