Needs Statement

Surgeons, advanced practice providers, fellows, residents, and medical students in various surgical specialties and subspecialties need to receive regular updates on advances in surgical care and clinical practices. Novel technologies and procedures will be examined as means to improve the diagnosis and treatment of medical conditions requiring surgical intervention. The series aims to expand the knowledge of learners, enhance surgical skills, increase surgical efficiency, disseminate surgical best practices, and improve surgical outcomes.

Educational Objectives

At the conclusion of the session, the participants should be able to:

  • Analyze the contributing factors that can lead to the failure of removing the specimen during the appendectomy.
  • Identify preventive measures to avoid similar incidents.
  • Develop strategies to improve patient safety protocols, specifically related to postoperative care and follow-up procedures.
  • Discuss the distinctive challenges in managing diabetes in patients who have undergone a total pancreatectomy.
  • Recognize early signs and symptoms of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) in surgical patients.
  • Develop tailored postoperative plans for patients at high risk for complications such as DKA.
  • Identify best practices that minimize the risk of leaks and complications.
  • Distinguish strategies to enhance intraoperative monitoring and early detection of cystic duct leaks during robotic cholecystectomy.
  • Develop protocols for postoperative management in cases of cystic duct leaks after robotic cholecystectomy.
