In this presentation, Dr. LaVonya Bennet, Dr. Jonathan Blessingame, and Dr. John Saunders discuss the causes, effects, and neurobiology of trauma, and promote the adoption of trauma-informed care in the clinical setting. They provide guidelines and strategies for health care providers to help patients experiencing trauma-related disorders, including prolonged grief disorder.

Needs Statement

Psychiatrists, psychologists, psychiatric nurses, social workers, and healthcare professionals in related disciplines need to receive regular updates on advances in neuroscience, psychiatric research, psychotherapy, and the evolving best practices for evaluating, diagnosing, and treating psychiatric disorders. The series aims to improve clinical practice through critical appraisal of psychiatric research, the use of evidence-based treatment approaches, and the integration of multiple treatment modalities to enhance the quality of psychiatric care and improve patient outcomes.

Educational Objectives

At the conclusion of the session, the participants should be able to:

  • Define trauma and demonstrate greater understanding of its effects on survivors.
  • Characterize prolonged grief disorder and recognize the risk factors for its development.
  • Review the Six Principles of Trauma-Informed Care as developed by the National Center for Trauma-Informed Care for public health emergencies.
  • Discuss the importance of practicing trauma-informed care in psychiatry and behavioral sciences.
  • Apply a trauma-informed approach to mental health care to improve patient engagement, treatment adherence, and mental health outcomes.
