In this presentation, Dr. Thomas Kosten discusses his research on the role of biomarkers, specifically epigenetic microRNAs, in suicidality and recovery from attempted suicide. He describes patterns in blood and brain gene expression found in study subjects who have completed suicide and proposes future research directions and potential screening tools to improve health outcomes for high-risk patients.

The series aims to improve clinical practice through critical appraisal of psychiatric research, the use of evidence-based treatment approaches, and the integration of multiple treatment modalities to enhance the quality of psychiatric care and improve patient outcomes.

Educational Objectives

At the conclusion of the session, the participants should be able to:

  • Review the multiple factors associated with suicidality including genetics interacting with psychiatric and behavioral disorders.
  • Discuss how epigenetic microRNAs (miRNA) can provide integrated and rapid gene regulation relevant to predicting risk and recovery from suicidality and how these changes in miRNA levels can be tracked in blood samples.
  • Recognize significant changes in blood levels of microRNAs as biomarkers for recovery from suicidality during hospitalization.
  • Describe how neurobiology may lag behind verbal statements of “not feeling suicidal” and identify “accident prone” individuals at high risk for serious suicide attempts.
