Palliative Care for Pediatric and Adult Patients

Needs Statement

Faculty physicians and trainees in the Department of Medicine and the Department of Pediatrics who are involved in patient care need to receive regular updates on guidelines and recent advances in the fields of internal medicine and pediatrics. The series aims to address gaps in the care of patients across the age spectrum, particularly of those who have chronic childhood illnesses and are transitioning to adult medical care.

Educational Objectives

At the conclusion of the session, the participants should be able to:

• Describe the similarities and differences between the practice of pediatric and adult palliative care.
• List common palliative care communication techniques and tools that are sensitive to patients and their family members.
• Develop a plan to apply palliative care communication tools and incorporate them into interdisciplinary care.

It is up to participants to determine whether the relationships influence the activity faculty with regard to exposition or conclusions.
