Needs Statement

This education series is targeted at pediatric hematology-oncology faculty, residents, fellows, medical officers, clinical officers, nurses, pharmacists, medical students, and other healthcare professionals in the Global HOPE network in Africa and Houston involved in the management of children with pediatric hematological malignancies. The series aims to increase knowledge of the learners regarding the clinical challenges and appropriate management strategies in patients with pediatric hematological malignancies in resource-constrained settings, and encourages learners to implement the recommendations and protocols for adapted treatment in clinical practice to enhance the quality of patient care and outcomes.

Educational Objectives

At the conclusion of the session, the participants should be able to:

  • Summarize the clinical findings in a child thought to have sickle cell disease.
  • Review differential diagnoses for macrophage activating syndrome.
  • Discuss macrophage activating syndrome and secondary histiocytic lymphocytosis, and the main challenges in diagnosis.
