Racial and Socioeconomic Disparities in the Incidence, Treatment, and Treatment Response in Type 2 Diabetes

Needs Statement

Physicians, residents, fellows, students, nurse practitioners, nurses, and other healthcare professionals need to be regularly updated on the advances in guidelines, basic science and clinical research, treatment modalities and management strategies for patients with diabetes. The series aims to increase knowledge and skills of the learners in these topic areas in order to enhance the quality of care and improve patient outcomes.

Educational Objectives

At the conclusion of the session, the participants should be able to:

• Recognize current limitations in the assessment and application of socioeconomic measures in clinical research.
• Apply novel methods to determine, define, and analyze socioeconomic status in various observational and interventional data sets to improve patient outcomes.
• Identify the effects of socioeconomic status on diabetes incidence, treatment, and treatment response.
• Implement strategies in practice to address how racial and socioeconomic disparities affect diabetes healthcare delivery.
