In this presentation, Dr. Lisa Meeks discusses the challenges that patients and learners with disabilities face due to harmful stereotypes, lack of access, and lack of inclusion. She shares trends and best practices to address these barriers to care and education.

Needs Statement

Physicians, residents, fellows, medical students and other healthcare providers across practice areas encounter health care equity issues such as health disparities, social determinants of health, cultural/linguistic competencies, and social justice. The series aims to broaden the awareness of learners in these topic areas provide strategies to address these issues as they arise.

Educational Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the participant should be able to:

  • Recognize the barriers to healthcare for patients with disabilities.
  • Acknowledge the deficiency in disability-informed patient care.
  • Distinguish the disparate health outcomes for patients with disabilities that result from lack of access and information.
  • Describe potential pathways for disability-informed healthcare through contact theory.
  • Describe trends for disability inclusion across the medical education continuum.
  • Apply best practices for disability inclusion in medical education and training.
