Needs Statement

Physicians, faculty, anesthesiologists, fellows, residents and medical students at Baylor College of Medicine need to be regularly updated with new advances and guidelines in anesthesiology to increase clinical knowledge, and implement them in clinical practice to improve competence and enhance the quality of patient care and outcomes.

Educational Objectives

"Aspiration While Under Anesthesia"

At the conclusion of the session, the participants should be able to:

  • Identify patients at risk of perioperative aspiration.
  • Assess and implement interventions to decrease the risk of perioperative aspiration.
  • Recognize the complications of aspiration.
  • Apply the Ben Taub guidelines for patients at high risk of aspiration.

"Perioperative Hyperglycemia Management"

At the conclusion of the session, the participants should be able to:

  • Recognize the importance of glucose control during the perioperative period.
  • Apply knowledge of glucose control to manage hyperglycemia.
  • Locate the appropriate protocol and order sets in the electronic medical record system.
