Texas CME Requirements
The Texas Medical Board* (TMB) requires 48 continuing medical education (CME) credit hours every 2 years. At least 24 of these must be formal AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ or 1A credits.
Ethics (2 hours): Topics include professional responsibility, risk management, domestic abuse, and child abuse.
Opioid & Pain Management (2 hours): Required for all physicians. Pain clinic practitioners have additional requirements—check TMB guidelines.
Human Trafficking Prevention (1 hour):
Required by Senate Bill 415 (2023)
- Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) -approved course required
- May count toward ethics requirement
- New physicians: First renewal period
- All physicians: Every third renewal period

Ethics CME Credit
At least 2 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ of the 24 formal hours must be in medical ethics and/or professional responsibility (including risk management, domestic abuse, or child abuse). Courses must be approved for ethics or professional responsibility credit by the accrediting agency.

Opioid and Pain Management CME Credit
At least 2 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ of the 24 formal hours must cover:
- Best practices and multi-modal approaches to pain management (including physical therapy, psychotherapy, and alternative treatments)
- Safe and effective opioid and controlled substance prescribing, including:
- Standards of care
- Identifying drug-seeking behavior
- Patient communication regarding prescriptions
- Prescribing and monitoring protocols
Credit Options:
These 2 hours may count toward:
- Medical ethics/professional responsibility requirements (all physicians), OR
- The 10-hour pain management requirement for physicians practicing in pain clinics (see "Other Specialty Type Requirements")
