CME Requirements
Every two year licensure period, the Iowa Board of Medicine requires 40 CME and 40 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Training for identifying and reporting child and dependent adult abuse must be acquired every five years, as well as, two CME hours each in chronic pain management and in end-of-life care.
Iowa Topics Requirements
Physicians in primary care and the following specialties—emergency medicine, family medicine, general practice, internal medicine, neurology, pain medicine, and psychiatry—must complete:
2 CME credits every 5 years in End-of-Life Care (not palliative care).
Chronic Pain CME focused on CDC guidelines for proper opioid prescribing.
The Iowa Board of Medicine is developing specific CME requirements for license renewal, allowing sufficient time for compliance. Until finalized, physicians seeking chronic pain CME should choose courses aligned with CDC opioid prescribing guidelines.
Mandatory reporters must complete training provided by DHS:
Child abuse reporting: 2-hour initial training, then 1-hour refresher every 3 years.
Dependent adult abuse reporting: 2-hour initial training, then 1-hour refresher every 3 years.
