The Medical Board of California requires 50 CME hours in MD AMA PRA 1™ and 50 MD CME hours every two years.
The one-time requirement of 12 of CME in pain management and treatment of terminally ill and dying patients must be finished before the second license renewal date or within four years, whichever occurs first.
California Topics Requirements
California-licensed physicians (except pathologists and radiologists) must complete a one-time 12-hour CME course in pain management, terminal patient care, and the risks of addiction with Schedule II drugs. This can be fulfilled by either:
- Completing 12 CME hours on pain management and terminal patient care, divided as relevant to their specialty, or
- Completing a 12-hour course on managing opiate-dependent patients, including 8 hours on buprenorphine or similar treatments.
Courses must be ACCME, AMA, CMA, or AAFP-accredited and count toward the 50-hour CME biennial requirement.
