Primer on Telemedicine Series
This series of six short training videos provides the learner with an overview of telemedicine in the United States, including best practices, legal and compliance guidelines, and tips for workflow and patient satisfaction. It is recommended for all providers with limited or no experience in telemedicine and who are considering conducting telemedicine encounters.
Module 1: Introduction to Telemedicine – Definitions, Categories, and Types of Telemedicine
This module introduces telemedicine; distinguishes it from telehealth; defines three basic categories of telemedicine; covers various types of telemedicine; and introduces the importance of geography and rules for reimbursement.
Module 2: Applications of Telemedicine – Select Examples
This module provides the results of a recent systematic review regarding the effectiveness of telemedicine and provides a brief overview of a few select examples of telemedicine applications in the United States, including telestroke, telepsychiatry, and low acuity urgent and primary care applications.
Module 3: Physician Practice Standards and Licensure
This module opens with an overview of BCM policies requirements licensure requirements for telemedicine and then links to a video that provides the learner with an overview of medical practices in adherence with Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement policies.
Module 4: Requirements for Telemedicine – Texas Telemedicine Regulatory Requirements
This module discusses the regulatory environment for conducting telemedicine in the state of Texas, including the latest available information regarding the utilization of telemedicine capabilities during the 2020 Coronavirus outbreak.
Module 5: Operating Procedures – Technical requirements, room requirements, camera positioning, lighting, and best practices
This module provides guidance on how to conduct a telemedicine visit by providing recommendations on technical considerations and best practices, including connectivity, equipment, etiquette, camera positioning, audio quality, lighting, and other tips.
