Needs Statement

Pediatric hematology/oncology, radiation oncology, pediatric surgery, and radiology physicians, residents, fellows and medical students need to be regularly updated on advances in the diagnosis and management of patients with hematologic disorders and malignancies. The series aims to broaden the knowledge base of learners in these topic areas and improve their competencies to enhance the patient care experience and outcomes.

Educational Objectives

At the conclusion of the session, the participants should be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of the standard practice guideline regarding blood culture collections in patients with fever/neutropenia.
  • Review and apply the current IDSA guidelines regarding blood culture collection in patients with fever/neutropenia.
  • Recognize the benefit of paired blood cultures in treating the febrile neutropenic patient.
  • Review data regarding positive blood cultures and their collection from inpatients over the past 3 years.
