In this presentation, Dr. Phillip Schauer discusses the recent developments in the surgical treatment of diabetes mellitus. He also shares a historical perspective of the medical and surgical treatment of diabetes, starting with the discovery of insulin by a surgeon, Sir Frederick Banting, in 1921.

General, plastic, thoracic, vascular, cardiothoracic, abdominal transplantation and surgical oncology physicians, residents, fellows and medical students need to be regularly updated on novel therapies, as well as advances in surgical care and clinical practices that will aid them in treating a variety of surgical procedures to increase the patient care experience and improve practice efficiency.

Educational Objectives

At the conclusion of the session, the participants should be able to:

  • Review the history of surgery regarding to treating diabetes.
  • Describe the outcomes of medical versus surgical treatment of type 2 diabetes.
  • Recognize frequency of diabetes remission after surgery.
  • Demonstrate a greater understanding of the history of insulin and how it was discovered 100 years ago by surgeon, Frederick Banting, MD.
  • Discuss being inspired by research and discovery.
