In this session of the annual William D. Seybold Distinguished Lectureship, Dr. Thomas Varghese discusses the American College of Surgeon's Strong for Surgery Quality Improvement Program, including: design principles, lessons learned, and ways in which surgical care has been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Needs Statement

General, plastic, thoracic, vascular, cardiothoracic, abdominal transplantation and surgical oncology physicians, residents, fellows and medical students need to be regularly updated on novel therapies, as well as advances in surgical care and clinical practices that will aid them in treating a variety of surgical procedures to increase the patient care experience and improve practice efficiency.

Educational Objectives

At the conclusion of the session, the participants should be able to:

  • Identify and evaluate evidence-based practices to optimize the health of patients before surgery.
  • Explain the design principles of the American College of Surgeons Strong for Surgery quality program and summarize lessons learned from participating sites across the nation.
  • Discuss key factors in pre-surgical care that have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Detail a vision for the future to improve surgical practices and population health.
