This Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery Grand Rounds session will take place on Wednesday, December 14, 2022 at 7:00 a.m. Attendance will be available virtually through Zoom.

Needs Statement
Surgeons, advanced practice providers, fellows, residents, and medical students in various surgical specialties and subspecialties need to receive regular updates on advances in surgical care and clinical practices. Novel technologies and procedures will be examined as means to improve the diagnosis and treatment of medical conditions requiring surgical intervention. The series aims to expand the knowledge of learners, enhance surgical skills, increase surgical efficiency, disseminate surgical best practices, and improve surgical outcomes.
Educational Objectives
Diagnosis and Treatment of Necrotizing Fasciitis
At the conclusion of the session, the participants should be able to:
- Discuss the differential diagnosis for necrotizing fasciitis.
- Review treatment options for necrotizing fasciitis and identify the indications for a highly aggressive approach.
- Recognize how tunnel vision, attachment to diagnosis, and team miscommunication can affect surgical intervention.
Operative Death from an Uncontrolled Hemorrhage Emanating from a Liver Tumor in a Patient with End-Stage Liver Disease
At the conclusion of the session, the participants should be able to:
- Discuss the clinical management of liver tumors, liver failure, and ascites.
- Review the significance of the model for end-stage liver disease (MELD) score in preoperative decision-making.
- Delineate the ethic principles of withholding surgery when treatment is deemed futile.
- Develop a plan to communicate effectively with family members in difficult situations.
Delirium Tremens, Reintubation, and Surgical Site Infection after Repair of a Perforated Gastric Ulcer
At the conclusion of the session, the participants should be able to:
- Recognize postsurgical delirium tremens.
- Adopt protocols to prevent postsurgical delirium tremens and improve team communication concerning this condition.
- Delineate the importance of documenting surgical wound classification and decision-making steps with regard skin closure.
A Great Save: Treating Tension Pneumothorax during Endovascular Surgery
At the conclusion of the session, the participants should be able to:
- Review the occurrence of tension pneumothorax during surgical procedures.
- Develop a clinical management plan for diagnosing and treating tension pneumothorax.
- Demonstrate how effective team communication can effect better treatment outcomes.
