Chief Residents’ Presentations (May 10, 2023)

Needs Statement

Surgeons, advanced practice providers, fellows, residents, and medical students in various surgical specialties and subspecialties need to receive regular updates on advances in surgical care and clinical practices. Novel technologies and procedures will be examined as means to improve the diagnosis and treatment of medical conditions requiring surgical intervention. The series aims to expand the knowledge of learners, enhance surgical skills, increase surgical efficiency, disseminate surgical best practices, and improve surgical outcomes.

Educational Objectives

Resilience and Wellness in the Face of Burnout

At the conclusion of the session, the participants should be able to:

• Define resilience in relation to occupational stress.
• Describe wellness and how physicians need to recognize its importance.
• Discuss what we can do as individuals and as a department to enhance personal well-being.

Surgery and Perspective: Appreciation for Life Outside of the Operating Room

At the conclusion of the session, the participants should be able to:

• Describe the day-to-day challenges a surgical trainee and his or her family may face.
• Distinguish between surgical career paths and the opportunities they offer.
• Identify cultural trends in careers and alternative pathways.

Surgeons and Medical Neutrality

At the conclusion of the session, the participants should be able to:

• Explain medical neutrality and the exemption of healthcare facilities as targets of warfare and the protection of healthcare personnel during times of conflict between states of similar military capacities.
• Define medical neutrality in the context of intrastate conflicts.
• Identify the surgeon’s role as an advocate in creating an international accountability culture in medicine.

It is up to participants to determine whether the relationships influence the activity faculty with regard to exposition or conclusions.
