This Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery Grand Rounds session will take place on Wednesday, February 1, 2023 at 7:00 a.m. Attendance will be available in-person at Alkek Building N.315.

Needs Statement
Surgeons, advanced practice providers, fellows, residents, and medical students in various surgical specialties and subspecialties need to receive regular updates on advances in surgical care and clinical practices. Novel technologies and procedures will be examined as means to improve the diagnosis and treatment of medical conditions requiring surgical intervention. The series aims to expand the knowledge of learners, enhance surgical skills, increase surgical efficiency, disseminate surgical best practices, and improve surgical outcomes.
Educational Objectives
Using an Arterial Line while Repairing a Small Intestinal Injury
At the conclusion of the session, the participants should be able to:
- Review the anatomical structure before performing a surgical procedure.
- Recognize that even small surgical procedures should not be rushed.
- Compare the risks and the benefits for every indicated procedure.
Rectal Stump Leakage and Surgical Site Infection after Total Colectomy
At the conclusion of the session, the participants should be able to:
- Discuss the surgical options for refractory ulcerative colitis.
- Review the risks and benefits of using an optic visualizing trocar in surgical removal of the colon.
- Recognize the importance of diagnosing post-surgical sepsis and following the steps in the sepsis resuscitation bundle.
Repairing a Spontaneous Pneumothorax Resulting from Placement of a Pigtail Catheter
At the conclusion of the session, the participants should be able to:
- Review the Selinger technique and the steps for proper placement of a pigtail chest tube.
- Discuss potential pitfalls and complication risks associated with placement of a pigtail chest tube.
- Delineate a strategy for management of an inadvertent placement of a chest tube in lung parenchyma.
