Needs Statement

Tobacco use can result in tobacco use disorders and serious health complications. By implementing medication and behavioral interventions, providers can increase patient success with smoking cessation and improve overall health outcomes. This presentation will address behavioral and medical treatment components for smoking cessation in primary care. This course is designed for medical and behavioral professionals working within a primary care setting.

Educational Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the participant should be able to:

  • Determine effective behavioral modification tools and medication interventions for smoking cessation.
  • Discuss motivational interviewing skills for smoking cessation, including: empathy, reflective listening, affirmations, developing discrepancy, and avoiding argumentation.
  • Outline the pharmacotherapy for smoking cessation plan including monitoring for safety and efficacy.
  • Implement motivational interviewing in patient counseling to increase patient engagement and success in smoking cessation goals.
