Needs Statement
This skills and simulation-based OBGYN Emergency Training Course is designed to reinforce critical clinical skills and improve performance in obstetrical and gynecologic emergencies commonly encountered by OBGYN hospitalists and generalists.
Many OBGYN clinicians feel unprepared to respond effectively to emergencies that occur on both a frequent and infrequent basis. This evidence-based course reinforces clinical knowledge, critical skills and emergency response performance through simulation-based reviews, hands-on training, and guided debriefing.
The course addresses these deficiencies through a structured, evidence-based curriculum grounded in obstetrical emergency guidelines and simulation-based activities. Core content includes the recognition and management of pregnancies of unknown location, hypertensive crisis and eclampsia, postpartum hemorrhage, and maternal code. The course also emphasizes skills development in ultrasound recognition of ectopic pregnancy, shoulder dystocia management, and breech delivery, with a focus on current techniques and best practices. The goal of this course is to enhance clinicians’ ability to recognize and manage critical obstetrical and gynecologic emergencies by addressing existing knowledge gaps and strengthening essential clinical skills.
Educational Objectives
At the conclusion of the conference, participants should be able to:
- Recognize the increasing incidence of cesarean scar pregnancy and apply evidence-based diagnostic principles, including ultrasound assessment, to evaluate pregnancies of unknown location and suspected ectopic pregnancy.
- Apply current management strategies for hypertensive crisis and eclampsia in obstetric patients, including timely recognition, stabilization, treatment, and escalation of care.
- Demonstrate evidence-based approaches to postpartum hemorrhage management, including rapid assessment, treatment prioritization, escalation of care, and team communication.
- Recognize, learn, and manage maternal code scenarios using evidence-based resuscitation principles, role clarity, closed-loop communication, and coordinated team-based response.
- Perform critical obstetric emergency skills, including shoulder dystocia maneuvers, vaginal breech delivery techniques, breech extraction, and approaches to deep pelvic arrest, with emphasis on newer techniques and evolving best practices
- Integrate simulation-based practice and guided briefings to improve clinical decision-making, procedural confidence, team communications, and emergency response performance.
