Pain Management in the Cancer Patient

In this presentation, Dr. Charu Agrawal and Dr. Paige Farinholt discuss common causes of pain in patients undergoing cancer treatment and current recommendations for pain management in this patient population. They discuss the different techniques and challenges in treating pain and in screening for opioid misuse.

Needs Statement

Faculty and trainees within the Department of Medicine who are involved in the care of patients need to be regularly updated with the recent advances and guidelines in the fields of internal medicine and quality improvement to increase clinical knowledge, and to implement the advances and guidelines in clinical practice to enhance the quality of patient care and outcomes.

Educational Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the participant should be able to:

  • Utilize screening tools for non-medical opioid use.
  • Distinguish pain management approaches in opioid-naive and opioid-tolerant patients.
  • Identify special considerations for opioid selection.
  • Review adjunct analgesics and nonpharmacologic therapies.
