Professional Statement
I am a highly organized and self-driven individual, passionate about taking care of patients on the healthcare system macro level and developing my career in the field of healthcare epidemiology. My leadership commitment can be gauged by the fact that I hold an MBA (healthcare management) from the University of Arizona, a Certificate in Safety, Quality, Informatics and Leadership from Harvard Medical School, and a Lean Black Belt Six Sigma Certificate in Healthcare. Possessing eight years of experience of working in academic healthcare leadership positions, as the medical director of antimicrobial stewardship then infection prevention, I have gained extensive insight within this field. My key leadership competencies include, but are not limited to, physician leadership, developing quality programs, pandemic preparedness, risk assessment and hospital regulatory compliance. In my current position with CommonSpirit Health (CSH) Texas Division and Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center (BSLMC) as an associate professor and the Medical Director of Infection Prevention and Antimicrobial Stewardship for CSH TX division (17 hospitals), I am accountable for leading a team of over 50 infection preventionists and infectious disease pharmacists and carrying out a wide range of responsibilities to improve hospital-acquired infection rates. I oversee antibiotic and diagnostic stewardship, outbreak management, surveillance, disaster preparedness and quality improvement at both BSLMC and CSH Texas Division. As the medical director of infection prevention and antibiotic stewardship, I am a skillful communicator, with excellent organizational, decision making and time management skills. I have authored over 45 publications in peer-reviewed journals with a majority related to healthcare epidemiology and antimicrobial stewardship. Some of my accomplishment in this position includes: marked reduction of Clostridioides difficile infections (53%) by using a new bundle with an estimated savings of $775,000 annually, reduction of colorectal and orthopedic surgical site infections after implementing two new checklists, an estimated savings of over $500,000 annually with a new urine culture order set, and establishing new subcommittees for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia, ventilation-associated pneumonia and orthopedic surgical site infections. Currently, all hospital-acquired infections are now either similar or better than national average. Educating medical students, residents, fellows and other faculty members is my passion. I have developed a one-month rotation for the infectious disease fellows in infection prevention and antibiotic stewardship and a one-year track for second- and third-year infectious disease fellows in infection prevention, antibiotic stewardship, quality improvement and leadership. Additionally, I am the Department of Medicine Vice Chair for Quality Improvement and Innovations. I have developed a quality academy for to provide training for all fellows in the Department of Medicine. My mission is to instill a learning healthcare culture by fostering healthcare improvements and encouraging implementation of innovations in healthcare services. On a national level I served on the Finance Committee of the IDSA, and the Public Policy and Government Affairs Committee of SHEA. I currently serve on SHEA education and guidelines committees, IDSA QI committee and the board of directors of the certification board of infection control and epidemiology (CBIC). I was recently selected as a Fellow of IDSA, SHEA and ACHE and was elected as the president of Houston Infectious Disease Society.
